Gentle ways to soothe a crying newborn
Crying is a newborn’s strongest signal. Start with care basics, then layer comfort: arms, motion, and soft sound. Tools can help you through a stretch — they do not replace checking whether baby needs a clinician.
- 01
Check the basics
Feed, diaper, temperature, burp first.
- 02
Hold and shush
Motion + voice often help before any app.
- 03
Add soft sound
Cry Soother sequence or Mixer white noise.
- 04
Reset yourself
Safe put-down + New Mama Calm if you need it.
Check needs before sound
Feed, diaper, temperature, burp, and clothing tags or scratchy seams. Hungry and uncomfortable babies need care first; white noise cannot fix an empty tummy.
If crying feels extreme, baby seems unwell, or you feel overwhelmed, put baby down safely on their back in a crib and take a breath — then call a trusted person or clinician. Never shake a baby.
Comfort layers many families try
Skin-to-skin, side or stomach holding while awake and supervised, gentle rocking, a walk, a pacifier if you use one, and rhythmic shushing can all be part of a settle toolkit.
Soft white noise or womb-like layers may help some babies after needs are met. Keep volume moderate and speakers away from the crib.
Care for the person holding the baby
Your nervous system matters. Tag in a partner, step onto the balcony for two minutes with baby safe in the crib, or play a short calm track for yourself.
Hard crying stretches are common and exhausting. Support is strength, not failure.
How Cry Soother fits
Cry Soother listens briefly on-device for a cautious wellness cue, then can start a calming sequence (womb & white noise, shushing, heartbeat). Cry audio is not uploaded.
“Calm now” works without recording. Results are not a diagnosis of why baby is crying.
Soothing FAQs
Why does my newborn cry every evening?
Evening fussiness (sometimes called the witching hour) is common. See our witching hour guide for gentler next steps — and call a clinician if you are worried.
Can an app explain the cry type?
WombVibe offers only a gentle, non-diagnostic cue. Always trust clinical care for illness concerns.
What if nothing soothes my baby?
Some stretches pass only with time and arms. If crying seems inconsolable, unusual, or paired with fever or poor feeding, contact your pediatrician or emergency services.
